The Blue Jackets re-signed veteran defenseman Marc Methot on Tuesday, giving him a new 4-year, $12 million deal. Methot played in 74 games in Columbus, registering 15 assists in the process. Methot isn't necessarily a fantasy pool-type defenseman, but he does provide some pretty good minutes for Columbus these days.
Not too long after acquiring his restricted free agent rights in a deal, the Minnesota Wild have signed rugged forward Darroll Powe to a new 3-year deal, reportedly worth $3.2 million. Powe is a bottom six checking forward, who played in 81 games for the Flyers in 2011, scoring 7 goals and adding 10 assists. He will definitely make the Wild a little tougher to play against, in his minimal minutes.
The Senators have come to terms with pugilist Zenon Konopka, signing him to a 1-year deal, reportedly worth $700,000. Konopka played in all 82 games for the Islanders in 2011, scoring 2 goals and adding 7 assists, also leading the NHL with 307 PIM. Konopka is also regarded as one of the better face-off men in the league, which sees him take a lot of draws in the defensive zone.
Finally, the Blues added a little bit more depth and veteran experience on Tuesday, signing unrestricted free agent forward Scott Nichol to a 1-year deal, reportedly worth $700,000, with performance bonuses that could be added on. The 36-year old forward played in 56 games for the Sharks in 2011, scoring 4 goals and adding 3 assists. Nichol will be the elder statesman on a very young club, hoping to shape up a new identity for the team.
