2012 4th Round Draft Pick |
The Winnipeg Jets acquired forward Eric Fehr from the Washington Capitals on Friday afternoon, adding a little bit of depth to their side, while opening up some valuable cap space for the Capitals.
Fehr definitely brings some size to the table for the Jets, listed at 6'4" and 212 pounds, he will be one of the team's biggest players when camp opens in September. Fehr hasn't quite found a good scoring touch, but I think a few people believe that he is only around the corner from a pretty good year. It would be hard to imagine it happening with a somewhat underwhelming Jets team, but at least they should be able to provide the big winger with some quality minutes, possibly some top six time.
The Capitals were the first team to touch the rare air above the cap ceiling this week after signing Troy Brouwer to a deal and they still have a couple of restricted free agents left to sign in Mathieu Perreault and Karl Alzner, the defenseman being the top priority.
This deal should make things a little easier for the Capitals and it should provide a new opportunity to a Manitoba-born NHLer, who will get the chance to play in his home province.
With this deal in the books, the Capitals come down below the cap ceiling, now having 21 players signed on for $63.2 million (leaving $1.1 million), while the Jets move up a shade, having 18 players signed on for $43.6 million, now having to spend $4.7 million, just to get to the floor. This is definitely a deal that works well for both sides financially.
