The Anaheim Ducks added some depth by signing Jean-Francois Jacques on Wednesday, giving him a new 1-year deal, reportedly worth $650,000. In 2011, Jacques was an inconsistent member of the Oilers' line-up, playing in 51 games, scoring 4 goals and adding an assist. He has bottom six written all over him, not much of a fantasy player.
The Columbus Blue Jackets signed veteran defenseman Radek Martinek on Wednesday afternoon, giving him a 1-year deal, valued at $2.2 million. Martinek is considered to be a fairly steady defenseman, with very little offensive upside, but steady nonetheless. In 2011, Martinek scored 3 goals and 13 assists in 64 games for the Islanders, ranking 111th among all defensemen in pool scoring.
The Panthers re-signed restricted free agent forward Mike Santorelli, rewarding his fine effort in the 2011 season by giving him a 2-year, $3.2 million deal. Santorelli was one of the team's scoring leaders and helped keep the team in a few more games. He scored 20 goals and added 21 assists in all 82 games for Florida, he definitely has the up-and-coming tag on him, which looks good with a fresh team around him.
The St. Louis Blues added a pair of veteran forwards to help aid their young team into the next phase of their growth cycle, signing both Jamie Langenbrunner and Jason Arnott to 1-year deals on Wednesday. Both players are former captains in the NHL and should be able to bring all kinds of wisdom to a very young crop of talented players. In 2011, Langenbrunner had 32 points (9 goals and 23 assists) in 70 games between New Jersey and Dallas, while Arnott had 31 points (17 goals and 14 assists) in 73 games between New Jersey and Washington. Neither player were really lighting up the scoresheets, but they have definitely more value-added features than just scoring talents.
The Tampa Bay Lightning added a little bit more depth to their bottom six, as they signed forward Tom Pyatt to a 1-year, $525,000 deal on Wednesday. Pyatt spent the 2011 season as a part of the Montreal Canadiens, playing in 61 games and picking up 7 points. Pyatt will definitely looked upon to help put some stability into the team's bottom six, he was starting to round out to be a good 3rd/4th line player in Montreal.
The Washington Capitals signed newly-acquired winger Troy Brouwer on Wednesday, giving the restricted free agent a 2-year deal, worth $4.7 million. Brouwer was traded to Washington from Chicago earlier in the off-season, added to a Capitals team that longs to be harder to play against, especially in the playoffs. Brouwer certainly gives the Capitals that kind of edge, not to mention a reasonable scoring touch. In 2011, Brouwer scored 17 goals and added 19 assists in 79 games, ranking him 167th among all forwards in scoring.
