Ladd Avoids Arbitration

The Winnipeg Jets avoided arbitration with one of their key players on Tuesday, as Andrew Ladd signed a new 5-year, $22 million deal (a $4.4 million cap hit per season).  The deal sounded like it was going to get done, regardless of arbitration or not, which was a very positive sign for Winnipeg and their fears of players not wanting to sign in the city.

Ladd accepted the captaincy of the Atlanta Thrashers in the 2011 season, well before the deal was done to send the team to Winnipeg, so it was very important for the Jets to get this deal done soon.

Scoring-wise, Ladd had a good year in Atlanta, scoring 29 goals and adding 30 assists in 81 games, ranking him 69th in pool scoring, 48th among all forwards.  With a little bit more scoring help around him, Ladd could possibly turn into a late 1st round or early 2nd round pick in a lot of deep drafts.

Salary CapThis signing on Tuesday has inched the Jets a little closer to the salary cap floor, now having 17 regular players signed on (nine forwards, six defensemen and two goalies) for a projected salary cap total of $41.4 million. This means they'll need four forwards and another defenseman on the roster for a minimum of $6.9 million in total cap space, just to hit the cap floor.
