The New York Rangers are mired in a bit of a restricted free agent conundrum at the moment, with big names on the list and not a great deal of cap space to work with them. On Friday, they did manage to get one name stricken from the list, as Artem Anisimov re-signed with the club. The new deal is for two years and it is worth $3.75 million, a $1.875 million cap hit per season.
Anisimov stepped up and played pretty well for the Rangers in 2011, scoring 18 goals and adding 26 assists in all 82 games, ranking him 121st among all forwards in pool scoring. The young Russian proved to be pretty versatile, moving up and down throughout the team's line-up in the season and he will get another couple of years to possibly earn himself a little bit more than the deal he walked away with on Friday.
Anisimov is a favourite of one team in the hockey pool draft and is quietly turning into a good pick-up, even if it is only for scoring depth in the late rounds.
With Anisimov signed on, the Rangers now currently have 18 players signed on (11 forwards, five defense and two goalies) and currently sit at a projected total of $47.5 million against the cap. With names like Brandon Dubinsky and Ryan Callahan still on the list to be signed, there might not be very much room left, but depth has been signing cheap, so maybe the Rangers are not in that bad of shape.
