By virtue of playing his first full season up in the NHL, Chris Conner becomes somewhat notable with his 1-year, two-way deal, which is worth $550,000, with the Detroit Red Wings. Conner played in 60 games with the Penguins in 2011, scoring 7 goals and adding 9 assists and should be a player that will get bottom six minutes at best, but it does seem a little more likely that he'll be a farm hand first.
The New York Rangers re-signed restricted free agent Michael Sauer to a new 2-year deal, worth $2.5 million on Friday. Sauer appeared in 76 games for the Rangers in 2011, picking up 3 goals and 12 assists, ranking 116th among all defensemen in scoring in the year. The 23-year old rearguard really impressed the Rangers' brass and has obviously done enough to make a name of himself on the roster going forward. Don't think he's really hockey pool material though.
The Philadelphia Flyers were able to lock up one of their recent acquisitions in the Mike Richards deal to Los Angeles, as they have signed restricted free agent forward Wayne Simmonds to a new 2-year deal, reportedly worth $3.5 million. Simmonds is a gritty bottom six player with a little bit more offensive upside, who finished the 2011 season with 30 points (14 goals and 16 assists) in 80 games for the Kings. That was good enough for 201st among all forwards in scoring.
The Tampa Bay plucked Ryan Shannon off the unrestricted free agent market on Friday afternoon, signing him to a 1-year deal, worth $625,000. Shannon played in 79 games for the Ottawa Senators in 2011, scoring 11 goals and adding 16 assists, playing mostly as a 3rd liner for the club. The Lightning add a little bit more cheap depth to their team, not to mention some more speed, which should fit in well next season.
