Amidst rumours of some possible NHL destinations, the Senators have decided to make cap room by sending Martin Gerber down to the AHL for the time being, as Brian Elliot is taking over for the Senators in the net. Gerber cleared waivers before the All-Star Break, which meant the Senators had the opportunity to find him a new home, either here in the NHL or in Europe, but he could find no immediate takers. His stint in the AHL will not count against the cap, but since he is on a one-way deal, he will be paid what he is owed.
Gerber was also an immediate drop for Grant in the Waiver Draft this week, as the first player actually moved. He had really fallen out of favour early in the season, but it wasn't until Elliot was considered seasoned enough to take on some minutes, before Gerber had any movement downwards. Alex Auld was also in the mix for some starting minutes, but even he has failed in the eyes of the coaching staff for earning more minutes as a starter. It's probably a good idea to avoid either one of those two and start to consider Elliot for the back half of the season.
