The Blue Jackets made a deal to increase their chances in making the playoffs by acquiring Jason Williams from the Atlanta Thrashers for a prospect defenseman and a draft pick. The Jackets are looking for more scoring to compliment their excellent goaltending from Steve Mason, as they try and hold on to the 8th and final playoff spot in the West.

When you round out the deal, it looks good for both teams. Williams isn't quite as good as his namesake in Carolina and is more battle-tested than his namesake in Toronto and he does have something to prove. Williams will provide some good depth on the wing and could figure in some ice-time on the top line, depending on what the coach suggests.
Both players dealt will be free agents in the off-season, but Williams will be unrestricted. His $2.2 million cap hit isn't a problem for the Blue Jackets and the Thrashers opened up a little bit of extra space, if they so decide to use it.
Williams is in Box 21 on the Sheet, but he shouldn't be considered while Michael Ryder of the Bruins is lighting it up in Boston.
