Happy New Year everyone! 2009 is now upon us, a Winter Classic piece is coming up here pretty quick. Both the Draft and Sheet pools are going quite well and have been keeping quite close... well, the Draft is still pretty close anyways. Hopefully we'll all see some great hockey here in the new year, which will hopefully bring a whole lot of scoring. Well, I wish everyone a good & prosperous year... maybe even a little bit of luck too! And now the news...
The Islanders and Panthers took part in an afternoon game on New Year's Eve and the team from Long Island was without Box 19 forward, Trent Hunter, due to a sore back. Hunter was checked through a gate in the boards and appeared to be hurt pretty badly. The team hasn't disclosed an actual amount of time that Hunter will miss, but there shouldn't be too much surprise if he misses quite a bit of time. Hunter wasn't taken in the Draft, but is one of the better players available for the second Waiver Draft.
The Coyotes were pretty scratch happy last night, as Keith Yandle, Daniel Carcillo and Daniel Winnik were all scratched from the game, while David Hale was re-inserted into the line-up. The three that were scratched have all drawn attention to themselves recently and it's not for the right reasons. The coaching staff is trying to send a message to those three players, hoping to get their numbers up.
The Coyotes are also now without their number one goalie, Ilya Bryzgalov, as he is hurting with a sore back. The Coyotes called up Josh Tjordman from the AHL to back up Mikael Tellqvist last night. There is no word as to how long Bryzgalov will be on the shelf, but you can be assured that Chris, his Draft owner, is hoping that he isn't out for too long.
