There is going to be an application of a short-term goaltending plan in Ottawa, as Martin Gerber has been sent down to the AHL under the conditioning assignment clause, so he doesn't have to pass through waivers. Gerber has fallen out of favour with the coaching staff and will likely spend the maximum two weeks allowed by the league in his conditioning stint, while Brian Elliot gets the number one role and Alex Auld backs him up.
In 14 appearances this season, Gerber has amassed a 4-9-1 record with 1 shutout and 1 assist for the Senators, all collected by Grant in the Draft this season. Now that Gerber has been sent down to the minors, his production will take a huge hit.
Gerber is in the final year of his contract, which is worth $3.7 million against the cap.
