The Red Wings will have to deal with another injury this season, as Tomas Holmstrom will undergo surgery to repair a sports hernia. Holmstrom will remain out of the line-up for up to five weeks, which should rest him up for the remainder of the season and a long playoff run. Holmstrom has already missed some time due to a back injury this season, which cost him 8 games. His current injury was only thought to be a groin problem, but after further review of the injury, a sports hernia was found and will now have to go under the knife.
Holmstrom, a Draft pick of Don's, will not be able to improve on his 30 points in 40 games pace for a while this season. Holmstrom's 0.75 points-per-game pace is one of the better paces this season, but his injuries have been quite the hindrance to great success in an overall season. I suppose his role in front of the net leads to injuries like these, so it's hard not to expect Holmstrom to get hurt in a season.
Overall, this likely won't hurt the Red Wings from top to bottom, in actual thinking, it should improve the team come playoff time, as one of their top playoff performers will be surgically healed with five weeks of playing time to get his timing back. He'll be someone to look to in the Playoff Pool.
