The Boston Bruins are closing in on the salary cap ceiling quite quickly this Summer and they moved a little closer to the top with the signing of defenseman
Mark Stuart, to a new 1-year deal on Thursday. Stuart, who became an unrestricted free agent on July 1st, re-signed with the club for a cap hit of $1.675 million. In 2010, Stuart wasn't so much of an offensive machine for the Bruins, only scoring 7 points in 56 games for the Bruins, but if it wasn't for a few injuries, he would have eaten a lot more minutes on the ice than he did in his 56 games. He might be a ways down on the depth chart, but at least he's on the chart.
| Forwards | Defense | Goalies |
| Nathan Horton | Zdeno Chara | Tuukka Rask |
| Patrice Bergeron | Dennis Seidenberg | Tim Thomas |
| David Krejci | Johnny Boychuk | |
| Mark Recchi | Matt Hunwick | |
| Marco Sturm | Andrew Ference | |
| Michael Ryder | Mark Stuart | |
| Marc Savard | | |
| Dan Paille | | |
| Milan Lucic | | |
| Shawn Thornton | | |

With a couple of buyouts and a contract overage penalty, the Bruins have 18 players signed on for a total annual cap hit of $57.9 million at the moment. Three more forwards and a defenseman would have to sneak in with minimum salaries to snuggle up to the ceiling, but if Marc Savard and Tim Thomas are eventually moved, the Bruins can definitely lift their average cap hit remaining significantly.
