The Sabres managed to jump into the free agent frenzy by signing one of the top defensemen available. Jordan Leopold received a 3-year deal worth $9 million on Thursday, helping the Sabres replace Henrik Tallinder, who left the organization to go to New Jersey. Leopold ranked 61st among defensemen with 26 points in 81 games for the Penguins in 2010. This should work out to be a pretty good signing for the Sabres.
The Chicago Blackhawks made a move for a big, tough defenseman, likely to fill the void left behind by Adam Burish. The Hawks signed John Scott, a 6'8", 255 lbs. defender, who prides himself on penalty minutes. In 2010, Scott picked up 90 minutes in 51 games and could be a very valuable player if your fantasy pool has penalty minutes counting for points. Otherwise, Scott only picked up a goal and an assist for regular scoring.
The Oilers signed their acquisition from the Blackhawks fire sale, Colin Fraser, to a new 2-year deal and should figure into the Oilers line-up this season. Fraser played in 70 games for the Blackhawks in the regular season, picking up 19 points and ranking 275th among all forwards, so he really shouldn't be on the fantasy radar. Still not a bad depth signing for the Oilers anyways, he'll figure into the next Oilers team update.
The Rangers re-signed 35-year old veteran Vaclav Prospal on Thursday to a new 1-year deal worth $2.1 million. Prospal had a pretty good year for the Rangers, scoring 20 goals and 38 assists in 75 games for the Rangers. He has found a good home in the Big Apple and he'll get another chance to lift them into the playoffs. Prospal should be a decent pick in your fantasy draft, but the aging winger might take another little hit to his production, mostly to due age.
