The Edmonton Oilers are helping to expedite the procedure of getting
Sheldon Souray out of town by putting him on waivers on Friday. According to
the Edmonton Journal, the Oilers have been exploring trade options, but have not had much luck with teams looking to acquire the 33-year old defenseman via a trade, so now they are hoping that Souray will be snapped up without compensation on the waiver wire, taking the remainder of his deal, which has 2 years left at a $5.4 million cap hit. According
to Pierre LeBrun's tweet, the Oilers are also not exploring putting Souray on re-entry waivers, taking on half of his salary cap hit and the team that claims him would be responsible for the remainder of that hit. This could all be a big problem for the Oilers, especially if no one wants to take on Souray or his large contract this year.
