The Red Wings re-signed restricted free agent defenseman Derek Meech to a new 1-year deal worth $500,000 on Thursday. Meech, 26, has been working in the Detroit system for quite some time now, finding it difficult to get a full-time job with the team, but 2011 does look to be his year to finally do it. This new deal that he has signed is a one-way deal, meaning that he will be paid NHL money at either level, which lends to the suggestion that he will play full-time with the team.
In 2010, Meech played in 49 games with the club, scoring 2 goals and adding 4 assists. If he turns out to be a full-time player with the Red Wings, I think we might be in for a breakout year for him, especially with unrestricted free agency right around the corner.
