I really kind of missed the boat with Carlo Colaiacovo re-signing with the St. Louis Blues today. I managed to get Jaroslav Halak's deal, Cam Janssen's deal and Brad Winchester's new deal, but not the re-signing of one of their better defensemen. Colaiacovo re-signed with St. Louis to a new 2-year deal, which is worth $4.25 million, a $2.125 million cap hit each season.
Colaiacovo finished 42nd among all defensemen in scoring in 2010, with 7 goals and 25 assists in 67 games with the Blues, finishing at almost half a point-per-game. He should figure well into your defensemen rankings for the coming season, especially with a good young team around him. I would not hesistate to call him soft, which is his biggest draw back, never playing a full season in the NHL, but he could just as easily be considered "due for a big season."
His cap hit is another step in the right direction for the Blues to hit the salary cap floor, which really is a non-issue at this point.
