The Maple Leafs were also active on Wednesday, signing Brett Lebda to a new 2-year deal and also re-signed Tim Brent to a 1-year deal. Lebda joins Toronto by way of Detroit last season, joining a blueline that is already becoming overstocked with one-way contracts. Brent, a career minor-leaguer, will play for the AHL team in Toronto, hoping for another shot at playing with the big club.
Lebda, an undrafted defenseman, spent the last five seasons with the Red Wings, playing a pretty good role with the team, picking up quite a few games, but really fell out of the depth chart during the playoffs, playing only 2 games in last year's run. In the regular season, Lebda only played in 63 games picking up 8 points and by the looks of where he is in the Maple Leafs depth chart, I don't suspect it will get any better. On the other hand, he will have a cap hit of $1.45 million per season in 2011 and 2012, so there must be something that GM Brian Burke sees.
