The Hurricanes continue to be active, even if it is only re-signing players these days. Unrestricted free agent defenseman Joe Corvo has decided to return to the Hurricanes for the 2011 and 2012 season, signing a 2-year deal on Wednesday worth $4.5 million in total, a $2.25 million cap hit each season.
Corvo, 33, is regarded more as an offensive defenseman, one that is usually a fairly decent pick in a fantasy draft. Unfortunately, a leg injury in December restricted his season to only 52 games and dropped his point totals a bit. Corvo finished with only 6 goals and 12 assists, ranking him 100th among defensemen, a way down from the 38 points he picked up in 2009. I would be looking for a bounce back from Corvo in 2011.
The Hurricanes have now lifted themselves above the salary cap floor, thanks to this new deal and their buyouts that are on the books. I have the Hurricanes listed at 15 players at a cap hit of $45.1 million. I'm also expecting the team to add more young players to their line-up, just to keep costs down.
