Erat Sidelined

Horrible news for the Predators and Peter, as they have lost Martin Erat for the remainder of the regular season and likely the bulk of the playoffs, saying that the Predators make it, with a broken leg. Erat hurt himself over the weekend and his injury is as serious as everyone has feared. A broken leg will usually keep a player out of the line-up for upwards of 8 weeks in most cases, which doesn't bode well for Erat's chances of playing again this year.

Erat finishes the season with only 6 games to go in the year, but he has been a huge plus in Peter's chances for winning the Draft this year. Erat finished the season, playing 71 games, scoring 17 goals and adding 33 assists. At the time of his injury, his play was just starting to pick up, which could be the toughest part to swallow of all. His stock could very well be on the rise this summer.

Tuesday's Preview (13 Nights Left)

Even with minimal games on the schedule, some teams were able to average out a point per game or a little bit better on Monday. Peter and John P., however, were the only two teams in the top seven to not draw a point out of the action last night, although John P. only had one player going last night, so he could be somewhat excused. Nevertheless, the lead expanded last night to 12 points, while the race for 2nd tightened up a bit, as third and fourth each picked up 3 points on second.

The real scoring match though, occurred in Phoenix, as the Coyotes ate up the Stars, 6-5 in overtime, but there wasn't many points to be had in the top seven, so they all went to waste. Shame.

Tuesday night's action should be a lot more substantial, as there are seven games on the schedule. Let's see what kind of action we'll be looking forward to tonight.

Now, that John P. has been added to the top table, there really is no game that every team in the top seven has a player in, but I am beginning to see that maybe the addition was a little premature and that a substraction will be required sooner, than later.

It does look like the really good match-up will be in Columbus, as the Predators show up to play a key divisional match. The Jackets failed to win a game over the weekend against St. Louis, while the Preds got away with beating the Wings on Sunday. In this game, we'll have a good goaltending match-up, as first place Clayton has Steve Mason, while second place Peter has Pekka Rinne. That's some real head-to-head action. These two teams will hook up again on Saturday as well.

Another busy game on the schedule for Tuesday is Tampa Bay visiting Boston, as all teams, but John P., have players in that one. Nine players within the top six are going in that game.

The top team, in terms of players, tonight is Peter, who has the possibility of ten players, including both goalies, especially since Marty Turco did not start for the Stars last night in Phoenix. The Stars travelled to Los Angeles overnigh and will have another late game on the West Coast.

Marcus will have the benefit of haaving Cristobel Huet in net for the Blackhawks, as they face his former club, the Canadiens in Montreal tonight. Now would be a great time for him to get hot, as Nikolai Khabibulin may have had his confidence shaken a little bit.

Well, there you have it. I'm not sure if there is going to be much for live scoring tonight, as it could be a busy day/early evening at the office. There will be an update in the morning though, regardless.

Musical Chairs in Phoenix

The only new notes from last night's play is from the only team that likes to keep my injury/news page busy these days, the Phoenix Coyotes. The only pool player getting re-inserted into the line-up last night for the Coyotes was Mikael Boedker, but coming out was Peter Mueller (Box 3), Kyle Turris (Box 8) and Nigel Dawes (Box 25). These are really just footnotes to the night, as none of these players have really figured into the pool scoring much this year.

Legwand Update

A blog post this morning has confirmed that David Legwand will now miss the remainder of the regular season, because of a broken orbital bone. Legwand, a Draft pick of Grant's, will likely be ready for the playoffs and should figure somewhere on the Playoff Pool Sheet. He should be nicely rested for a tough first round series against one of the top seeded West teams.

Legwand finished with 42 points in 73 games with the Predators this season.

Monday Preview (14 Nights Left)

Well, just for a little more added interest, we have now added a seventh team to the Preview list, as John P. has managed to work his way into being 1 point behind Jeremy, who could still be considered in the running for a money spot, especially if one of those teams have an exceptional week in Week Twenty-Seven. They will have to stay within about 10 points of third place by the end of the week before they can be considered money worthy in Week Twenty-Eight. The more added intrigue, the better, I think.

This is what we know at the moment. We have a lead of only 8 points heading into this week, down 2 from the start of Week Twenty-Six. We have a different order from second through fifth, which is also quite interesting. Monday's schedule is quite light, but could also be a good jump start to the teams on the table, except for maybe our new team.

Opening up the week with a bang is Marcus, who has four players going in the three games tonight. Marcus has to make up 10 points to get himself back into the money spots and he will have to rely on some of his scoring forwards to do the business tonight and get himself back into the race. He will also face the cut-off for the money spots (of 10 points back of third), if his team isn't careful.

Four of the seven teams each have three players going tonight and there is only two of a possible six starting goalies in the top seven tonight as well. Peter and John B., both in the money, both have money goalies tonight, looking to earn key wins.

John P., our newcomer to the top money table, only has one player going tonight and it's Milan Michalek, who has been picking up his socks of late, re-gaining his scoring touch.

San Jose/Calgary looks to be the key match-up tonight, as only one team, Peter, doesn't have a player in the game and everyone else could make a move on him, if that game becomes a bit of a barn burner.

Week Twenty-Six Newsletter

Oh boy, oh boy! We're now down to the final two weeks of the season and things couldn't be more exciting. The Sheet pool's top six isn't quite set, there is still some movement left there to do before it's all said and done. That's exactly what we want when we come down to the nitty gritty, eh? In the Draft, we have six (maybe seven) teams still in the running for the money, which has made for the tightest race I think I've seen in my pools to date. I'm very excited about that, since it is much more exciting to get a crack at money when you're in fourth or fifth down the stretch. Nobody has to settle quite yet.

I am really hoping that the Playoff Pool will be somewhat similar of a race, but that one is less likely, as the intricacies of that pool is very dependant on how well you pick who is going to the finals. Will it be the favourites down the stretch or will it be a Cinderella story for a team in one conference. Well, good news, the Playoff Pool should be available some time this week, as teams start to filter their way in or out, it should become a lot easier to settle those questions. Stay tuned!

Poll Question
This past week, I had asked you who you would like to take if you had the first overall pick in next season's Draft and it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that Alexander Ovechkin was the clear choice, taking 8 of the 13 votes cast. Ovechkin finishes the week with 100 points, but he isn't the best player this year, as Evgeni Malkin finished the week with 107 points and only one vote in the poll. Getting two votes a piece, Jarome Iginla and Pavel Datsyuk got some consideration in the poll. Iginla has 84 points in 75 games this season and Datsyuk has 92 in 75.

With two weeks to go and races looking very tight, the questions are out there as to who is going to make it into the playoffs. So, let's do a playoff race question. Which of the following Western Conference teams do you want to see in the playoffs? It might be a bit of a loaded question, but I'm looking for votes, people! Nashville, St. Louis, Edmonton, Anaheim or Minnesota are your choices.

We had two teams really in the running for the Mover & Shaker this past week, each of them cracked the 40-point barrier and they were really pacing themselves well to even break the weekly record, but only one managed to do it, thanks to a big effort in Chicago by the Canucks. John P. took our weekly award, thanks to a record week of 47 points. Thanks to that record week, John can now see light at the end of the tunnel and now has a slight possibility for a money spot, now that he is only one point behind Jeremy in 7th spot. This may have earned John a spot on the daily preview, especially if his team can do this same sort of production for another two weeks.

John saw a lot of good production from a number of players, the most notable being, Henrik Sedin (9 points), Daniel Sedin (8), Patrik Berglund (7) and Roberto Luongo (6). Two of his active players did finish with zero points, but that really didn't seem to matter at the end of the week

This is John's third M&S award of the season and his second one in the last seven weeks. For his team's win this week, he has earned himself a Zach Bogosian rookie card from this year's Upper Deck set. Congratulations on the win, but as a Leafs fan, I'm sure he would be disappointed to know that this week's prize is a Matt Stajan jersey patch card. Also, for the last week of the season, we have a Darryl Sittler jersey patch card, which is the most expensive card of the bunch this year, so hope that your team finishes off with a bang.

On the Sheet this week, Roopi was our M&S, scoring a week-high, 74 points and moved up three positions, from 39th to 36th. At this point in the season, it's cool to get yourself a M&S award, especially when you're not really in the running for the money. It's the small victories that make the season a little more fun, don't you think? In Week Twenty-Six, Roopi had good contributions from Alex Tanguay (8 points), Corey Perry (6), Alex Ovechkin (6), Marc-Andre Fleury (6) and Martin Havlat (5). Other than Ovechkin, it really wasn't a big production week for the most popular players in the pool, likely one of the biggest reasons why a bottom team picked up the honour this week.

It was another tough week for Dale B. and his team, which hasn't at all found any luck this season. This week, he only managed to find 17 points out of the weekly work and that just won't do. You know it's been a tough year when your top player only has 70 points this season. Through injuries and extended cold spells, Dale has not had the best of luck anywhere this season. That is the way it goes some years, that's for sure. There really isn't much more that needs to be said here.

Taking our M&S of the Sheet's spot in the Standings was our Basement Dweller, Mitch, who finished the week in 39th spot, thanks to a 38-point week, the pool-low. Mitch moved down one spot to get to 39th, an average spot of where he's been hovering for the bulk of the season. Mitch has seen a high of 35th spot and a low of 41st in the past number of weeks and that's likely where he'll end up with only two weeks left.

Well, if you couldn't tell from the M&S award this week, it was a great week for the Sedin twins, who combined for 17 points in the week. Henrik Sedin was the one leading the way, however, with 9 points and earns himself the Player of the Week award, although with both of them doing so well, they could have shared the award, but that's not how we'll roll around here.

The Canucks were right in the middle of a six game road trip in Week Twenty-Six, so managing 9 points while traveling is also quite impressive. On Tuesday night in Dallas, the Canucks beat the Stars 5-2, Henrik scoring a pair and adding an assist. Thursday, the Canucks lost to St. Louis 4-2, but Henrik managed to tally an assist in the game. The Canucks then moved over to Colorado for a 4-1 win, there was a goal and an assist for Henrik. Finally, in Chicago on Wednesday, Henrik notched 3 assists in a 4-0 win. The Sedins have been quite hot of late, ever since Alex Burrows moved onto their line a few weeks ago.

Word on the street is that Brian Campbell is in the doghouse in Chicago and if you were to have a quick look at his numbers, you can see why. Campbell hasn't been the offensive force that he was signed on to be, only tallying 46 points this season, not even in the top ten of defensemen scoring. He also owns a -3 rating this season, on a pretty good offensive team. The Blackhawks will be in desperate need of him getting his act together before the playoffs start.

Other News and Notes

Well, it should come as no surprise that now that Ryan Miller is back in the net for the Sabres, that Mikael Tellqvist is now the odd-man out in the crease, as Patrick Lalime has earned his back-up spot. Maxim Afinogenov was also a healthy scratch on Saturday night as well, as he hasn't been getting along with the coaching staff of late. I am beginning to wonder if we'll see either player in the line-up here in the last couple weeks.

Rostislav Klesla left Saturday's game against the Blues in the third period with an undisclosed injury and he wasn't able to play in the second half of the home-and-home series, which the Blue Jackets fail to win a game in. Figuring back in the line-up on Sunday was Christian Backman, who was a healthy scratch in a number of previous games.

The Avalanche had a lot of movement in their line-up on Sunday night against the Ducks in Anaheim and it didn't look like much of it helped, as they lost 4-1. Ruslan Salei was out of the line-up due to a knee injury, while Wojtek Wolski was out of the line-up for the Avalanche with a flu bug. Inserted to the line-up was Marek Svatos and Darcy Tucker, who both returned from injury.

The Red Wings have had some troubles over the past couple weeks and a groin injury to Brian Rafalski wasn't helping as the Nashville Predators took it to them on Sunday. Rafalski did not practice with the team on Saturday and didn't dress on Sunday, so there is some wonder if the injury is a little more serious than not. If the injury is more severe, then a post should follow up the newsletter.

The Minnesota Wild are clinging on to some playoff hope and players are coming in and out of the line-up on a regular basis. The weekend saw Pierre-Marc Bouchard out of the line-up in Alberta because of the flu, while Kurtis Foster didn't dress in the second game, likely due to rest, but they did see the return of Mikko Koivu to the line-up, which is good news for Jeremy in the Draft, who is pinning his hopes with the Wild.

The Predators may have lost the services of Martin Erat for a period of time after the Czech forward took a Shea Weber slapshot in a leg and had to be helped off the ice. The extent of the injury was not divulged after the game and we may have a important update to Peter's last two weeks, as Erat has been one of his hottest players over the past week.

The Coyotes continued to rest some of their young players down the stretch, as they have played themselves out of the playoff race. Mikael Boedker was the man out of the line-up for the Coyotes on Saturday night against the Sharks. The Box 9 forward will likely be back in the line-up for the Coyotes next game against Dallas on Monday night.

The Sharks are now experiencing some injury concerns as they head down the stretch and into the playoffs. On Saturday night against Phoenix, the team was already without Jonathan Cheechoo, thanks to a lower body injury, which is considered day-to-day. During the game, the Sharks lost the services of Patrick Marleau to another lower body injury and he isn't on the plane as the Sharks leave on their new road trip. The Sharks open up their trip in Calgary on Monday night.

Well, Jannik Hansen did finally make a return to the Canucks' line-up this week, but he found himself back in the press box when the team took on the Blackhawks on Sunday night. The Box 9 forward may not figure back into the line-up much down the stretch, as chemistry is really coming together without him.

Hockey Night in Canada

It's the second to last Hockey Night in Canada in the regular season and we are in for a good one. We've got two games that have spoiler implications as a possibility in the early game, as the Maple Leafs are looking to give the Canadiens a hard time in Toronto, while the Senators are going to try and provide a speed bump in the Flyers run for the Atlantic Division title. The Habs and Leafs could have a bigger implication, as the Habs are trying to remain in the race for the post-season. In the second half of the doubleheader, the Canucks are in Edmonton to take on the Oilers, who are also trying to work their way into the playoffs. The Canucks have their eyes on the Northwest Division title, so the Oilers could play spoilers with a win too. Three good games available, three spoilers on the ice. Love it.

Outlining Sunday's Action

What an explosion of points for Peter on Saturday night. He made the huge move into second place and decimated the lead down to 7 points, making up a whopping 10 points on Clayton, who had a terrible night in the pool on Saturday night. Peter has also made the move for the Mover & Shaker award for the week, which is likely his third of the season.

Another big move in the night was Marcus, dropping from third to fifth in the standings. Marcus managed to lose out on 4 points on the lead on Saturday night and Clayton had a bad night, so what does that say?

The top six race got a whole lot more interesting. Heading into Sunday's afternoon action, the lead is back down to where it was on Tuesday, 7 points. There was a little bit of separation in the ranks, 3 points second to third, 7 points third to fourth, 4 more points fourth to fifth and Jeremy is falling behind further, back 4 more points to fifth. Let's see how the day could play out...

Well, let's start at the back of the bus, where Jeremy might get a little bit of a boost on Sunday, possibly getting Mikko Koivu back from a knee injury, which threatened his season. Pierre-Marc Bouchard missed Saturday night's game with the flu and is questionable for the action against Edmonton. He also gets one up on Marcus with Nikolai Khabibulin getting another start on Sunday versus the Canucks.

Marcus has fallen out this week, having only 19 points, 3 off the basement dweller, so he'll need a big night on Sunday with five skaters and Tim Thomas starting against the Flyers.

Benson might have a boost to his line-up as Marek Svatos made the trip down to the West Coast for the Avs' game against the Ducks, but he'll be a game-time decision. Phil Kessel is still out and there should be some news on him on Monday.

John still sits in third, but a little more comfortably going into tonight. He's still without Jason Arnott and Manny Legace. It doesn't look like either player is coming back any time soon.

Peter and his magical week may be without Pekka Rinne for the Predators' afternoon game against Detroit, as he started the day before. Otherwise, his team is still pretty healthy.

Finally, the leader, Clayton, may not have a goalie going today, as both Brian Elliot and Steve Mason started last night. Mason does have a chance at starting, as the Jackets may want to ride him until they clinch their spot. Otherwise, it's two games for Clayton to watch, BOS/PHI and VAN/CHI.

Saturday Afternoon Notes

It looks like Kari Lehtonen's season may be done, as he is now listed as out indefinitely with an upper body injury. Lehtonen left his last start after the first period, not to return, with an undisclosed injury, but now the Thrashers are saying that he is out indefinitely, which should mean the remaining two weeks. The Box 31 goalie still can't shake that injury bug in a year.

Quick note on Phil Kessel... it has been reported that he'll miss both games this weekend due to an undisclosed injury. Kessel, a Draft pick of Benson's, will now bring down his active players for the weekend at a terrible time. There is no word if Kessel will be available for any games next week. Stay tuned for that.

The Stars are expecting to be without Trevor Daley for tonight's game at home to Florida, thanks to a knee injury. Daley has been fitted with a knee brace and is walking around the Stars' locker room, according to TSN, but is doubtful for tonight. The Box 14 defender could be back in the line-up next week.

Click here to see an updated injury page.

Jarret Stoll Done

Box 5 forward, Jarret Stoll, has been shutdown for the season by the Kings on Saturday after he suffered a groin injury this week. Stoll was acquired by the Kings from the Oilers in the summer in the deal that sent Lubomir Visnovsky the other way. Stoll's move to Los Angeles did not make him a popular fantasy pick, as the Kings' offense was pretty low coming into this season, but he could have served as a decent depth player, as he finished the season with 41 points in 74 games this season.

Saturday Night Preview

That was one interesting night last night, as there was plenty of jockeying for position in the second, third and fourth spots, but there was only one switch at the end of the night, as John jumped into second place, over Marcus. Peter remained in the hunt for a position move, saw second once or twice throughout the night, but his goals scored on the tie-breaker is the worst of the top six teams. Will that come back to haunt him later?

Jumping a couple more points back into the fray, Jeremy had a big night from his goaltenders, as they are both healthy again. Ryan Miller and Nikolai Khabibulin both registered wins for him, helping him move within 3 points of Benson for fourth. The weekend will be a telling sign as to what he'll need out of the last two weeks of the season.

After all that jockeying and climbing, the lead remained the same at 16 points, as Clayton's few players managed to help him out that little bit, keeping the rest of the top six at bay... for now.

It's Saturday night and we have a pretty full schedule tonight, 11 games, in fact. Let's see who is all going tonight.

On the table, we have 64 players between the top six teams, but we also have 6 players in red, who are not expected to be in the line-up, bringing our total down to 58. With 12 active players tonight, Peter has the greatest number of players going, including both his goalies. Clayton follows with 11 players, Benson with 10, Marcus and Jeremy have 9 active, while John only has 7 active.

There are two marquee games tonight, featuring 9 active players each, with at least one player on each team. First of all, the Kings and Predators go at 4pm MT and then the first game of the HNIC doubleheader, Boston & Toronto, each figure to be big games. Bigger for Peter of course, because he has 3 players in each game. This has 'Peter's time to shine' written all over it. Could he be in second place by the end of the night?

It looks like we have a good night ahead of us... stay tuned!
