Well, it isn't just the superstar defensemen getting new deals today, it's also the goons that are getting some love too. The Atlantic Division got a little tougher with the acquisition of Derek Boogaard by the Rangers this afternoon, signing him to a massive deal (in terms of goons) of four years and $1.65 million per season. The actual cap hit itself on a season by season basis isn't too bad, because Boogaard is an imposing force on the ice, but signing him for four years seems a little bit much, but I don't have to lie in his bed that's made.
In 2010, finished with 105 penalty minutes in 57 games for the Wild, being a healthy scratch for the other games he didn't play in. This is about where his fantasy value stops, since he was only good for 4 assists otherwise. We are probably going to see a lot of fisticuffs coming from the Rangers this season, which makes them a good alternative for games to watch.
