Morning Player Notes in the Draft (Feb 9)

On Friday morning, the Chicago Blackhawks placed defenseman Jan Rutta on the Injured Reserve with an undisclosed injury, retroactive to the 6th.  It was an injury that kept the 27-year old free agent signing out of the lineup against the Dallas Stars on Thursday night, which appeared to be a healthy scratch at first glance, but would have been an embarrassing mistake, after seeing the IR placement today.  There's no word on the expected timetable for a recovery, but this does open the door to try some new blood in their lineup, as they recalled rookie defender Carl Dahlstrom to take his spot on the defenseman carousel.

Rutta was a Week Nine add for Grant's team this season, but the rotation had limited his play to only 14 games, where the Czech defender only had 2 goals and 5 points, not to mention a -10 rating, in that time.  Grant's chances at the money are dwindling fast, now 41 points back of 3rd place, down in 8th.

St. Louis Blues defenseman Joel Edmundson was on the wrong end of a Nail Yakupov slap shot and it caught him in the forearm and breaking it. The injury is so significant, that the 24-year old blueliner will require surgery and the Blues have said that they won't be reevaluating him for six weeks.  After Thursday night's action, Edmundson was ranked 79th among all defensemen in scoring, well within the pool worthiness with 6 goals and 15 points in 56 games.

For Mike, Edmundson was a Week Nine pickup, and he cashed in 6 assists in 29 games, since being activated, which is no screaming hell, but it was something.  Mike's team can still make some gains in the standings before the end of the season, sitting in 17th and only 15 points out of 12th.
