Olympic Pool Update (Day 1, Feb 14)
The men's ice hockey tournament got started bright and early on Wednesday morning, with a couple of 5:10am MT starts and with it brought a couple of upsets. The first one saw Slovakia get past the Olympic Athletes from Russia, 3-2, thanks to a 3rd period power play goal from non-pool forward Peter Ceresnak. That's one bonus point for a game-winner already out the window!
Martin Bakos of Slovakia was the most notable player of the bunch, finishing with a goal and an assist, giving Steve a quick 2 points out of this game.
The other upset came in the United States and Slovenia game, where the European nation, on the shoulders of their captain, Jan Mursak, who leveled the game at 2-2 late in the 3rd period and scored the overtime winner to get his team off to a great start in Pool B in the tournament. Mursak had the pair of goals, including the winner, for a 3-point effort, another player on Steve's team.
Overall, Steve walked away from Wednesday morning with 7 points, far and away the early leader heading into the second day's worth of action later on tonight.
Finland versus Germany goes tonight at 8:10pm, Norway goes against Sweden just after midnight tonight and then a couple more games will go first thing tomorrow morning, including the Czechs and Koreans and then the Swiss and Canadians. There should be lots of points in those four games, so we should see some really good action on the blog at this time tomorrow.
