The biggest news on Tuesday night was one of the first trade dominoes to fall, as the Ottawa Senators dealt defenseman Dion Phaneuf to the Los Angeles Kings in a cost saving measure, as the Senators try and restructure their roster, ahead of the 2019 season.

Phaneuf and gritty forward Nate Thompson are on their way to California and in return, the Kings parted with a big salary of their own in Marian Gaborik and young forward Nick Shore.  To help facilitate the deal, the Senators kept a portion of Phaneuf's salary for the duration of his deal, which lasts for another three seasons.

While the Senators are trying to restructure themselves ahead of this off-season, the Kings are pushing to get into the playoffs, currently residing on the outside looking in and taking a severe beating against the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday night.

In the hockey pool, Phaneuf is the only player of note and he belongs to Neil's 19th place team.  Remarkably, the defender is the most offensive of the four players being dealt in this deal, even if it is only marginally, but I don't think the move to Los Angeles will increase his production much, if at all.  I'm sure Neil's team would enjoy a little bit more of a push from the veteran defender, seeing as though his team is 17 points from the middle of the pack with lots of hockey left to play.
