The Capitals announced on Tuesday that they have come to terms with defenseman Tom Poti on a new 2-year contract extension, worth $5.75 million. Poti was to start the final year of his current deal, but will now have some security through the 2013 season with this new extension. The final year of his current deal carries a cap hit of $3 million, but his new deal starting in the 2012 season, will have a cap hit $2.85 million in each of the two seasons.
Poti goes into the Capitals preseason as their 2nd offensive defenseman, but also has young defender John Carlson on his tail for that position. In 2010, Poti racked up 4 goals and 20 assists in 70 games for Washington, ranking him 70th among blueliners in the league. I would imagine that Poti will get a good start as the number two guy, pick up whatever points he can, but I think all eyes will be on Carlson, likely good for reason too.
