Bad news for the Ottawa Senators on the first weekend of training camp. It was announced on Sunday morning that defenseman Filip Kuba will be out of action for the next 5-to-6 weeks with a broken leg. Kuba suffered the injury in practice yesterday, hitting a rut on the ice awkwardly and then immediately favouring the leg.
Looking at the calendar, six weeks would have him back for Halloween, missing the whole of October, the first month of the regular season. In October, the Senators will play 11 games and there is a certain possibility that Kuba will miss all of them and possibly some into November.
In 2010, Kuba didn't have an easy season with injuries either. He missed 29 games due to various lower-body injuries, missing time on four different occasions. I think it will be time to add Filip Kuba to the injury prone list, don't you?
If anything, you should be discounting Kuba down to 70 games at the most, more likely 50 games, taking into account the rest of the season. With him being injured right now, it may be best to wait until the first mid-season player exchange (or waiver draft in my pool) before you start thinking about having Kuba on your team.
With only six defensemen on the Senators Summer roster, including Kuba, this injury should blast the door wide open for prospects like Jared Cowen, Brian Lee and Patrick Weircioch. If you were possibly looking for some short-term gains with a prospect defenseman, here is your chance.
