Flyers Scratch Van Riemsdyk

It has been one of those sophomore jinx kind of starts for James Van Riemsdyk of the Philadelphia Flyers, as he has not been the same kind of player that earned him some notariety last season as a rookie.  Saying that, the Flyers coaching staff decided to make him into a healthy scratch on Saturday night, hoping that might help out his head and in turn, his hands.

Van Riemsdyk has yet to score a goal in the his first 13 games of the season, but has added 4 assists and is a +2, but you can tell that the Flyers want the young power forward to start scoring goals soon or it could mean some more trips up to the press box.

I don't think there is any question that this kid has the talent, but the mysterious sophomore jinx has seemingly hit Van Riemsdyk this year and it will likely be up to the Flyers to grin and bear it or risk destroying his confidence altogether.

ImplicationsI would have to believe that Van Riemsdyk will be back in the Flyers line-up for Sunday evening's tilt against Capitals and will come in with some fresh legs against a speedy opponent, which should sit well with Jani, who picked the youngster 208th overall (11th round) in this year's draft.  Jani goes into Sunday's action in 11th place in the standings, 13 points out of the money.  A good showing by Van Riemsdyk would go a long ways into jumping back into the fray.
