It hasn't been a very good season for Kris Russell of the Columbus Blue Jackets, having already missed time due to injury and his offensive talent hasn't helped him a great deal at the start of the season in the scoring race. On Monday night against the Predators, Russell was up in the press box as a healthy scratch, taking in the game from a different perspective. It sounds like Russell is in the dog house in Columbus and may have to work extra hard to get out. Getting out shouldn't be an issue with the talented rearguard, but it might take a little more drive and perseverance to get it done.
In 12 games this season, Russell has only picked up 1 assist, so it is very understandable why he has made the trip up to the press box. When Russell was drafted, he was projected to be a top-three defenseman on any given NHL club, but he's barely cracking the top-six in Columbus, which should be seen as an issue.
Russell currently belongs to the 15th place team of Stuart's, which is slowly making the climb out of the basement and into the mix again. He is only 33 points out of the money and we're nearing the waiver draft, so some improvements can be made. I'm getting the feeling that Russell may be one of those players who may fall under the knife and be cut from Stuart's team for some improvement, but he does have a little less than two weeks to change his mind.
