The Oilers decided to infuse their line-up with some more toughness in Carolina on Tuesday night, sending Box 13 defenseman Jim Vandermeer up to the press box for a game and bringing down tough guy defenseman Steve MacIntyre. This plan did not provide the overall results that were desired, as the Oilers ended up losing 7-1 to the Hurricanes. MacIntyre only played a shade over two minutes in the game, which really just shortened the bench for the Oilers, more than it really helped.
Also, speaking of shortening the bench, both Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle were benched in the game limiting their ice-time greatly. Hall finished with 8:47 of ice-time, while Eberle had 11:04.
After clearing waivers on Tuesday, Dustin Boyd has reportedly stayed with the Canadiens, but the team does have plenty of flexibility with the Box 23 forward, deciding to send him down to the minors or not. Boyd has not found a good fit in the Canadiens organization after being dealt there in the Summer from Nashville.
With the suspension to Joe Thornton, the Sharks did end up recalling Benn Ferriero from the Worcester Sharks of the AHL, playing in the first game without their captain on the weekend, but couldn't keep that spot for a second straight game, ending up being a healthy scratch for the game against the Anaheim Ducks. I'm expecting to see Ferriero return to the AHL very soon, since Thornton's two game suspension has concluded.
