The Buffalo Sabres rolled into Calgary after the holiday break, but it looks like Tyler Myers got an extra present over Christmas, one that I don't think he really wanted. Unfortunately, Myers was not able to dress for the Sabres, because of the flu, which you can add to the long list of problems the Sabres have been dealing with this season.
The Sabres ended up having no answer for the Flames after 40 minutes, losing 5-2 in the process.
It hasn't been the brightest of sophomore seasons for the giant defenseman, as he has 15 points (5 goals and 10 assists) in 35 games thus far. His point total is arguably okay, since he is still ranked 40th among defensemen, going into Monday night, but it was his plus/minus rating that had been suffering the most, as he wasn't as dominant in his own end this year. Granted, plus/minus isn't a statistic that counts for points in my pool, but it does in others, so it is worth mentioning.
The Sabres, as a whole, have been pretty bad all around, so you can't really peg Myers' plus/minus rating as one of the sole problems for the team, but it is part of the stack of problems that have been collected in the process.
In the draft, Myers was taken fairly early, 82nd overall (5th round) by Wayne, the 6th defenseman taken in the draft this year. That is awfully high praise for 2010's Calder Trophy winner, sadly, he hasn't been playing up to that sort of potential this season. Wayne currently sits in 4th place in the standings, so he can't be too disappointed with the lack of production from Myers.
