Some swelling in the knee of Rick DiPietro was enough to shut down the goaltender for an extra evening on Saturday, which gave minor-league goalie Nathan Lawson an opportunity to take the reins in the Islanders crease for a game. DiPietro is currently out day-to-day with his knee problem and will likely miss another start or two, just for precautionary reasons.
A combination of some health issues and a bad team in front of him, DiPietro and his goaltending partner, Dwayne Roloson, have not been having the best of seasons on Long Island. DiPietro has only appeared in 14 games for the Islanders, amassing a 4-6-4 record for the club, with 1 shutout, for 10 points in the pool this year. Those 10 points are only good enough to be ranked 351st in league scoring for the hockey pool, 41st among goalies this season. It is a step up from last season, but that really isn't saying much.
It was a gamble for Larry to pick DiPietro up in the waiver draft a few weeks ago, but his goaltending situation and in theory, DiPietro was going to get the bulk of the minutes for the Islanders and that's all anyone can really ask for. Of course, there is the injury factor that haunts DiPietro, especially the ones of a recurring nature.
Since the waiver draft order was determined at the end of Week Eight, Larry has fallen from 6th place in the standings down to 13th place. Larry was just 3 points out of the money at the time of the waiver draft order being determined, but now sits 34 points out and is in the bottom-third for the second jersey.
