I have missed out on the reporting of this one, but considering it is Christopher Higgins, all the way down in Florida, I can't say that I'm really surprised. I thought he was a healthy scratch for the last few games for the Panthers, but after missing more than a couple, I kind of got suspicious. It turns out, the Box 24 forward has been dealing with an infection on the top of one of his feet and it has been causing him problems. Higgins has now missed a week's worth of action due to it and it doesn't look like anyone is sure when he'll return.
After getting off to a reasonable start to his season, Mike Komisarek has somewhat slowed down on his scoring pace and gotten back to trying to play defense. Unfortunately, he was hit with an upper-body injury this week and was not able to dress against the Flyers on Thursday night, which helped make room for the return of Dion Phaneuf to the Leafs' line-up. I have yet to see any indication of how long Komisarek will be out of the line-up with this injury, but we'll consider him day-to-day.
While blocking a shot earlier in the week, Box 28 defenseman Jeff Schultz ended up breaking his thumb on the play and he will now miss the next 4-to-6 weeks with the injury. Schultz was the plus/minus leader in the NHL last season, but hasn't been quite as effective on the offensive side of the puck this year. In 29 games this year, Schultz has only picked up 5 assists, but the whole Capitals team hasn't been as effective either. Nevertheless, Schultz will be a tough hole to fill in their line-up.
