The Pittsburgh Penguins' depth had another test on Saturday night against the Blue Jackets, as they were without Evgeni Malkin for the evening, due to a recurrance of a knee injury, which he suffered earlier in the season. The coaching staff doesn't feel that the injury is at all major, rather Saturday night's absence was more for a rest than anything else.
How did the Penguins depth fare? A 7-2 win over the Blue Jackets was a pretty good showing.
The force that was Malkin's fierce scoring rate has seemingly continued to hide itself away, replaced by a mild-mannered scoring star, with a lesser scoring rate to his name. In 26 games this season, Malkin only has 8 goals and 14 assists, which has to be doing a small number on his overall pool value. Malkin is still getting points, but he has been replaced by players like Steven Stamkos in the conversation of best players in the league now.
Well, the last time we saw Malkin go down for a brief time, Leon was sitting in 11th place, 10 points out of the money at the end of October. Just over a month later, Leon still sits in 11th place, now 22 points out of the money, so there has been little improvement over the last month. Thank goodness the waiver draft picks kick into action on Monday night, eh?
