It has been a bit of a disappointing quarter to the season for the Panthers' Christopher Higgins, who has only picked up 3 goals and 3 assists in his first 23 games, so the coaching staff decided to make him the odd-man out for Thursday night's game in Los Angeles. The Box 24 forward was a healthy scratch for the first time this season, proving once again that Peter deBoer doesn't mind scratching some of the more established veterans to help push his message across.
After suffering a broken cheekbone last weekend against the Devils, Box 29 defenseman Bruno Gervais was not going to participate in Thursday night's game against the Rangers, despite practicing with a new face shield. Gervais has already missed a number of games this season, due to being a healthy scratch, so his fantasy value is way down, but this is also giving young players like Travis Hamonic a chance to get pro minutes, which will build for the future.
Another return to the press box was in order for the Rangers' Box 30 defenseman, Matt Gilroy, on Thursday night against the Islanders. Gilroy has struggled to find any consistency with the blueshirts this season, playing in only 18 games and picking up only 3 assists, so he should now be getting comfortable as the team's seventh or eighth defenseman, barring injury.
It continues to be a rough season for Tom Poti of the Capitals, as he has been in and out of the line-up a number of times, thanks to a lower-body injury that just keeps causing problems. Poti would be out of the line-up for a couple of games, return for one and then head back to the shelf again. The Box 27 defenseman is knocking on the door of injury prone status and he may have to be considered for next year's list.
