On Monday night, the Dallas Stars coaching staff opted to go with defenseman Jeff Woywitka after some quality outings last week on the blueline and with defensive transactions the way they were, someone had to sit for the game against San Jose. Matt Niskanen, the Box 12 defenseman for Dallas, was the odd-man out on Monday, earning a trip up to the press box for the evening, while his Stars played (and won) a pretty tight game against their division rivals. I would believe that Niskanen would get another game off after that result, but we'll have to stay tuned.
The Flyers have now recalled goaltender Michael Leighton from the AHL, because his conditioning stint has now expired with the minor league club. He has been practicing with the Flyers, but now walks into a very sticky situation, where Sergei Bobrovsky has done well enough to continue playing number one-type minutes, while Brian Boucher has played extremely well in the back-up role, even getting a couple games last week, playing as the hot hand. The Flyers will have to make a decision about their goaltending logjam soon.
The word from the San Jose Sharks was that Box 14 defenseman Douglas Murray was a little banged up and wasn't able to go in the game against Dallas. I didn't get to hear many more details than that on the broadcast, but his absence did give the Sharks the opportunity to dress Derek Joslin in the game, who scored his first career NHL goal. I'm not expecting to see Murray on the injured list for too long, unless something major gets announced in the next 48 hours or so.
