Thrashers Sign Modin

The Atlanta Thrashers have reportedly added unrestricted free agent forward Fredrik Modin to their potential 2011 roster.  Modin signed a 1-year deal on Saturday, but financial numbers were not disclosed in any of the initial reports, but I would have to think that we are getting into the territory where the deals will be coming a little cheaper, since the invites for training camp are going out and most guys just want a job now.  Modin had a cap hit of $3.25 million in 2010, but I would wager he has taken half that amount.

In 2010, Modin split time between the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Los Angeles Kings, playing only 44 games between the two sides, scoring 5 goals and adding 6 assists.  Modin was a rental player for the Kings, acquired at the deadline to help in their run to the playoffs and helped them in the first round, where they eventually lost.  A right knee injury at the beginning of the year was responsible for Modin missing 31 games, but also missed time before the trade with a bruised foot.  He could be considered a health hazard going into this season, but with only 11 points in 44 games, he probably isn't too high on many lists.

If Modin is indeed healthy, he should be a safe addition to the Thrashers, who are in need of whatever depth they can get their hands on, despite picking up whatever they could from the Blackhawks in their fire sale.  From what the Thrashers have done already in this off-season, it really seems more like they are just trying to get the best of what they can and then hoping they can be a team in the year, instead of building a team with an identity,  It leaves me rather perplexed on how I will approach the Thrashers at the draft.
