On Sunday afternoon, the Colorado Avalanche announced the demotion of four more players from training camp, including Box 14 defenseman Tyson Barrie, who was hopeful of breaking through a veteran-stacked blueline this year. Unfortunately, he didn't quite have enough to break through the logjam, so he'll continue to work on his craft in the AHL with the Lake Erie Monsters. There is a chance that he could be recalled, but as to when that'll happen likely depends on injuries.
On Friday (missed the boat on this one), the NHL suspended Box 14 defenseman Brendan Smith for the first five regular season games after his reckless head hit on Blackhawks forward Ben Smith on Thursday night. Smith, as a first time offender, got off slightly easy for a very devastating hit, something that he'll learn not to do again. After the suspension ruling came down, the Red Wings assigned him to the minors, but when he is recalled to the big club, he will have to serve his suspension upon arrival.
Late on Saturday, the Blues made a number of cuts of their own, including their Box 14 defenseman, Ian Cole. The Blues have a large number of defenders on their roster going into opening night of the regular season, but there looked to be a chance that Cole could crack the line up.
Between Barrie and Cole leaving for the minors this week, it doesn't leave a great deal of options for your Box 14 choosing. Choose wisely, you don't want to use up a trade early on in the season for a wimpy box like this.
