The Nikita Filatov experiment in Ottawa has hit a major snag, as the offensively gifted Russian has not made the most of his new opportunity with the Senators and has now gone from an opening night starter to a healthy scratch and on Thursday, a minor-league player.
Filatov was acquired by the Senators from the Blue Jackets in June, as Columbus was not having a great deal of luck trying to fit the youngster in their line-up full-time and they were not prepared to go forward trying to develop him for their system. The Senators, albeit with a new coach and system on board, were thought to be a much better fit, with some craftier offensive players, but through two games, Filatov has not impressed with only 1 point.
This move only impacts the sheet pool, as no one was willing to take the risk on Filatov in the draft. If a team has thought about taking Filatov in Box 21, you may want to re-consider that decision now, as there is very little hope that he'll come back with a vengeance. I think it would be fair to have assumed that if Filatov was going to do something with the Sens, it would have been an immediate turnaround.
