Backlund Going Through League Protocol
Calgary Flames forward Mikael Backlund was the recipient of a crushing open-ice blow from Minnesota's Matt Dumba on Thursday night and the result of that hit for the Swedish forward is an exercise through the NHL's concussion protocol, which the team has already announced that he will miss both weekend contests against the Predators and the Oilers and an evaluation thereafter.
There is no word on any placement on the IR, as of Friday night, since it looks like the Flames will wait and see how the testing goes over the weekend, so for now it will be day-to-day with a concussion and don't be surprised if any more comes from this.
Backlund has been fairly productive this season, posting 5 goals and 17 points in 29 games this year, ranking him 154th overall after Thursday's action, which ranks him 8th on the team in hockey pool scoring as well. A key component to the team's success this year.
Grant is holding onto Backlund in the pool this year and has likely enjoyed the successes he's seen from the Swedish centre, so far this year. His 5th place team in the standings has been getting good contributions all over and if they want to be back in the money conversation, he'll be hoping that this injury is of the short-term variety.
