I don't think anyone would have truly guessed that the deal between Montreal and Dallas in 2006 would have blossomed so well for the team in Texas, but it surely has and there is a contract to prove it.
Dallas sent defenseman Janne Niinimaa and a draft pick to the Habs for Mike Ribeiro (Dale B.) and another draft pick on September 30, 2006 and now Dallas has signed Ribeiro to a 5-year deal worth approximately $25 million.
The centreman has been the top offensive player statistically for Dallas in the past couple seasons, finally coming into his own this season averaging over a point per game. This is the sort of output Montreal really had envisioned for the Quebec native, but they were too quick to ship him out after his production and health declined a bit in the 2005-'06 season. We all know how hard the Habs fans are to their young stars.
This deal will keep Ribeiro in Dallas and should be a good leader for the team when players like Mike Modano (Dennis) finally call it quits.
