The news just doesn't get much better in Denver. They have now lost summer acqusition winger, Ryan Smyth (Dennis) for up to 8 weeks with a fractured ankle. Horrible news for the Avalanche, now that they're in the middle of the Division and Playoff race.
The Avalanche are still 7 points up on the 5th place Oilers in the Northwest Division and still 2 points up on 9th place St. Louis Blues in the Western Conference, but who isn't to say that the youth of the team still can't rally around these injuries. This does post an interesting note as to how the team will fare without their two big superstars in the line-up.
With Joni Pitkanen (Dennis) coming back to the line-up over the weekend in Edmonton, Dennis now has 6 players injured on the list, 5 of them long-term. There are hopes that defenseman Teppo Numminen (Dennis) may return to the line-up soon, but there is no actual expectation date posted.
On the Sheet, Ryan Smyth (Box 8) is actually one of the most popular players taken in the pool. He was taken 27 times, tied with Daniel Alfredsson (Box 15) for first place among taken players. Saying that, he'll be a huge miss in the pool.
