Bad news for the Philadelphia Flyers, as they have reported that Ray Emery has a tear in his abdominal wall, which will require surgery and will keep the goaltender out of action for about six weeks. The Flyers, who have been struggling of late, will now have to rely on Brian Boucher and the recently called up, Johan Backlund.
In 21 appearances with the Flyers this season, Emery has a record of 11-8-1 with a 2.83 GAA & .901 SV%. Those are pretty decent numbers, especially on a team that has had real difficulties over the past few weeks. Emery has been mired in a deep slump, going 0-4-0 in his last five appearances.
Emery currently ranks 14th among all goalies in the league in pool points (2 for a win, 2 for a shutout & 1 for an assist) with his 24 points this season.
In the Draft, Emery is a member of 14th place John P.'s team, so there isn't a great deal of implications on the money spots with this news. John's goaltending tandem ranks 9th in the pool, but this long-term injury will hurt that ranking badly.
On the Sheet, he was touted as the starter for the Flyers, so he's in Box 31. He was taken five times in the pool and ranks in the middle of the pack with his 24 points. It would be wise to move to either Martin Brodeur (40 points), Ryan Miller (38) or Marc-Andre Fleury (34).
