With word that the Capitals have recalled goaltender Michal Neuvirth from the AHL, the team has updated the status of Semyon Varlamov, who will now be out for about a week with a lower-body injury, which he had reportedly suffered near the end of the Capitals last game, which was a 3-0 shutout win for the Russian keeper. The official status for Varlamov will be day-to-day, but he is expected to miss a week.
Varlamov is a Draft pick of Trevor's, who currently sits in 13th place, 33 points out of the money spots. Varlamov is Trevor's best goaltender and has a goaltending tandem that ranks 5th in the pool, arguably what is keeping him within reasonable distance for a comeback, with just enough time to do it in. A week isn't huge, but it doesn't help.
On the Sheet, Varlamov was listed as the Caps starter, in Box 31, so he was up against some serious competition for picks, but he was taken once. His 29 points this season is 11 points back of box leader, Martin Brodeur.
