In an AHL bound deal, the Canucks have sent defenseman Shane O'Brien and prospect forward Dan Gendur to the Predators for defenseman Ryan Parent and forward Jonas Andersson on Tuesday. O'Brien cleared waivers on Monday and is eligible to head to the minors, but may have a spot in the Predators line-up, while Parent will likely start the season in Manitoba of the AHL.

Salary CapThis deal is a bit of a cap saver for the Canucks, who wanted to keep some depth on defense, but the cap hit was a little much, especially if players were going to be recalled from the minors for injuries and such. Parent does give the team some relief in that sense, but starting in the minors would mean that his cap hit isn't on the books to begin with.

The Predators, on the other hand, had some cap flexibility to spare and taking on that extra $700,000 shouldn't be the biggest burden to the overall cap picture for the team.  With all the movements that will be happening today, their flexibility should prevail without any hiccups.

Working out actual numbers today is kind of a lost cause with all the movements on the waiver wire and such.

This deal makes some sense in the sense that both of the main players in this deal have been juggled in moves and/or rumours in the past 12 months, so it was more like putting two and two together. Parent gives the Canucks keeps the defensive shape of their depth at a younger age, while O'Brien will give the Predators a little more toughness on the blueline.  There really is no pool value to this deal at the moment, as O'Brien isn't much of an offensive force and Parent will start in the minors.
