The Canucks had a small test of their defensive depth on Tuesday night, which they failed versus the Wild, as Dan Hamhuis was unable to dress, because of a foot injury.
Hamhuis blocked a shot against the Hurricanes on Sunday night and it had reportedly left him bruised pretty badly. The first set of X-rays were not conclusive enough, so another set had to be done on Tuesday, but no results have been posted yet. The Canucks go again on Wednesday night in Chicago and if there is no structural damage to Hamhuis' foot, it will only be his pain threshold keeping him out. Consider him day-to-day for right now.
In the first five games of the season, Hamhuis has only picked up 1 assist, but at the same time, he's really being used for his defensive abilities more than offensive skills. Points should come with a good unit for Hamhuis, it's all a matter of patience.
Hamhuis belongs to Leon in the draft this year and after Tuesday night's action, Leon currently sits 12th in the standings, already 19 points out of the lead. Leon is currently tied for 8th in points by defensemen with 10 points, which is pretty good standing at the moment. Since the injury to Hamhuis shouldn't be too serious, it really shouldn't effect his standing in this department too much.
