The New York Islanders have claimed forward Michael Grabner off of waivers from the Florida Panthers, possibly giving the Austrian winger some new life in the 2011 season.
Grabner was placed on waivers on Monday after not having survived the latest round of camp cuts in Florida and was likely on his way to the team's AHL affiliate in Rochester to start the 2011 campaign.
In 20 games with the Canucks in 2010, Grabner had 5 goals and 6 assists.
This now gives the Islanders two players in Box 25, with Nino Niederreiter sticking around with the club so far in this preseason. Grabner has new life in the selection sheet pool and looking at the Islanders depth up front, he may have a shot at some top six, if not 3rd line, minutes this year, which could pay off in the long run. Keep an eye on this one here.
