Franzen Out Indefinitely

Terrible news hit the Detroit Red Wings on Friday, as they are now expecting to be without Johan Franzen for at least the next four months after suffering a torn ACL in his knee on Thursday night against the Blackhawks. This does come as a blow to the Red Wings, who were going to need all of their veteran savvy to squeeze another long season in, if they are to go a long ways in the playoffs.

Franzen was on his way to having a good season in 2010, already having a goal and an assist in the first three games of the year. This setback will now keep him from having a full, healthy season in the league, which has been known to be one of his knocks in his NHL playing career.

Franzen has only played 80 games once in his career, way back in his rookie season with the Red Wings. Every season since, he'd miss at least 10 games.

The fantasy value of Franzen was quite high going into the season, but like a stock market crash, he went down like a lead brick in a swimming pool. Right down to the bottom. In the Draft, it was Trevor B. who picked him, 6th round, 94th overall. On the Sheet, he is currently situated in the third box for the Red Wings and there should be a mass exodus of his picks throughout the pool.

The injury should last until the middle of February, at the earliest, meaning he'll miss roughly 57 games and likely the Olympics, which we could all assume he would have made Team Sweden. On the bright side, he could be well rested for a playoff run, if it so happens.
