The Dallas Stars are starting their free agency frenzy start before anyone on their team becomes a free agent. On Friday, it's 36-goal scorer, Loui Eriksson, signing a long-term extension for six years. The deal is reportedly worth $25.5 million over the six season, ending in the 2015/'16 season, with a cap hit of $4.25 million per season.
In 2009, Eriksson scored 36 goals and 27 assists in all 82 games for the Stars, establishing himself as one of the team's key goal scorers and will be relied upon in the coming season.
Again, much like Stephane Robidas' deal the other day, the extension has no effect on the team's cap number this season, rather it begins to fill up the space that the Stars have for the season after. The Stars' 2011 cap hit currently sits at $31.4 million for 11 players. That's leaving the Stars in really good shape for the real free agent frenzy next July.
Eriksson and his 36 goals last year wasn't enough to bump him up in the annual draft that was held earlier this week. Eriksson was taken by Benson in the ninth round, 140th overall. If he has another season like he did in 2009, he should be moving up the ranks quite quickly.
