On Friday, the Kings announced that they had re-signed both goaltender Jonathan Quick and defenseman Davis Drewiske to new 3-year contract extensions. Both players were scheduled to become restricted free agents at the end of this season and both are currently full-time members of the club. Obviously, the team sees these players as guys that they are going to hang their near future on.
Quick, 23, has now taken on the number one job in Los Angeles and has been running quite well with it. Quick has already amassed 12 points in the 2010 season, after only four weeks, winning six games. That ranks him tied for fourth among all goalies in the league for points, tied for third among goalies in the pool, since Colorado's Craig Anderson was not taken.
Drewiske, 24, played in only 17 games in the 2009 season and he amassed three assists in that brief span. Still, there was enough fight in that kid to earn himself a spot out of training camp and he has now played in all ten games that the Kings have featured in this year. Drewiske has a goal and two assists already in October.
An early indication reports that Quick's cap number through the 2013 season will be $1.8 million per, meaning an overall hit of $5.4 million for a salary. If he can keep up the winning pace, there is a good chance that he'll become a bargain for the Kings and all the poolies that rely on his salary number for those years.
There is still no word as to what Drewiske's new cap number will be, but I would imagine a raise would bring him around the $800,000 mark, give or take a little bit.
With Quick's new deal on the books, I have the Kings' 2011 cap number at $41.7 million for 13 players, leaving them in pretty decent shape, especially with Anze Kopitar and Ryan Smyth on the books as well.
