Somewhat out of nowhere, the Florida Panthers announced on Monday that they had signed centre Domenic Moore to a new 1-year deal. Moore, an unrestricted free agent over the summer, went through the Summer underneath everyone's radar it seems, only to sign five days into the regular season.
The Panthers are far from cap danger this season, now having 21 players on their roster that has an annual cap number of $52.1 million. That cap number will not be the actual number that gets worked out by the end of the year, since there will be many factors to it, including the players that went to Helsinki for the Premiere games. The annual number does show that they will have some room to play with through the season, without much fear of touching the cap ceiling.
The signing of Moore should be a good one for the Panthers. He will give the team a little bit more depth down the middle, either as a third or fourth line centre. This could just as easily make Tomas Vokoun or Scott Clemmensen's job a little easier going forward, so that is where most of the fantasy value will come from. If injuries are to happen to any of the top centres, you can be sure Moore will be in line to take that job over and do a pretty good job with it too.
