Savard Out 6 Weeks

The season isn't getting any easier for the Bruins. First, it was cap problems, now it is injury problems. If we're not careful, we'll see a whole new Bruins team by Christmas.

On Wednesday, the team announced that they will now be without Marc Savard for upwards of six weeks thanks to a broken foot. The team placed him on Long Term Injury Reserve today, meaning that he will be out for at least 10 games and that his salary cap hit will not count for the time he is out of the line-up.

There was no indication as to how and when Savard broke his foot, but nevertheless, he'll be on the IR for quite some time now and the Bruins will have to deal with it.

Savard leaves the team as the team's leading point-getter in the fantasy level, having four goals and three assists in the first seven games of the season, averaging a point per game. That's a pretty huge scoring hole to fill for the six weeks, especially since he's the top line centre, setting up players for goals.

ImplicationsThe Draft is where this is going to hurt the most, as he was taken there and not so much in the Sheet. Savard has been a big part of Stacey's campaign this year, helping him reach up to his current position of 4th place. Savard is currently tied for second among his forwards in scoring thus far in the season, but now will be out of the line-up indefinitely and he becomes one less source of points for the time being. This certainly isn't what he's after this year.

Salary CapIf Savard was to theoretically miss games up until the beginning of Week Eleven, that would mean a total of 22 games missed and being back in the line-up around the second week of December. That works out to be about 27% of his season out the window, which means roughly, about a 27% discount on his $5 million cap hit ($1.34 million). That's a significant chunk of change, if they were to fill it out later on in the season.

This injury is going to hurt. The Bruins record, the player's production and fantasy teams all across the continent. Savard was a big producer and since the Waiver Draft in my pool is not for another four weeks, it will hurt Stacey a great deal going forward. It will be interesting to see what kind of moves the Bruins will make now, especially after all the ones they've made so far.
